This Is My Testimony: What God Did for Me Through Lupus

Hey, my beautiful readers! Welcome back to My Sassy Stories, where I share my life honestly, what I've experienced, how I felt, and what each season has taught me. Today I woke up on a mission. I wanted to sit my kids down and tell them what God has done for me, and then it hit me that I've never told y'all either. So, let's get into today's story.

This is my testimony. This is how I survived.

It Started on Christmas Eve

December 2024. Christmas Eve. I woke up with a rash on my face. Never had one before in my life. I thought I was allergic to the wash detergent. The hospital gave me steroids and sent me home. January came and brought the flu with it, and that rash was still sitting on my face. Then it left. Then it came back ten times worse.

That's when the doctors came in. About ten of them. They told me I had lupus.

I asked them, what is it? Can y'all fix it? Is it fixable?

They looked at me like I was crazy.

They Told Me Nine Pills for Life

I tried to figure it out naturally, but my body wasn't used to natural anything. I was depressed in 2023, eating everything that wasn't good for me and leaving alone the food that was actually healing me.

By 2025 they told me nine pills for life. Told me I couldn't wean myself off the steroids, then listed every bad side effect they came with and handed them to me anyway. Specialist after specialist, same sentence every time. There is no cure.

Then came the blood transfusion, and that day changed my whole life. I prayed. I had nothing left but my faith, and I told God I needed Him to help me. My body didn't reject it. It accepted somebody else's blood in me. I had nightmares for days. Two weeks in that hospital. When I finally came home, the smell that was in my house before I left was gone. Maybe it was a season that had finally finished with me.

What God Told Me to Do

I had one thing to do. Get my body back.

God told me I wouldn't get off those pills if I didn't do these things. I asked Him what things, because I was tired of swallowing pills every single day. He said remove the people who are stressing you out. So I did. He said every day when you get up, take a walk. So I walked with my dog. He said before you take those pills, eat your berries, drink your smoothie, make yourself a good breakfast. Then take them.

Every time I tell this story I get ready to cry.

Everything He told me to do, I did.

The first time I tried to wean off, my body wasn't ready. It was still healing. The second time, I asked God was I ready, and He said yes. Last October I stopped the steroids. I went to all the specialists so they could make sure I was okay, and every lab came back good. One of them told me I was doing real good, almost back to normal.

Then one morning I woke up and it felt like my soul jumped back into my body. I was touching on myself like, I'm back. Oh my God, I'm back.

That's when I knew to take my health serious. That's when I knew I had a testimony.

God Sent Me Two Angels

April 2014. No food, no money, just enough for some noodles and some quarter candy for the kids. I was down on my knees trying to provide. At the register, the lady told me a man had already paid for everything. I said where is he, let me thank him. I walked outside and he was gone. I had Rayshawn looking across the street and around the corner. All I remember is his hat.

Then January 2025. The lupus got the best of me and they kept me a few days. A man came in my room and asked was I from New York. We laughed. We talked. I told him how my hair fell out from the lupus, and he told me how to take care of it. He even touched it. Then he said, you don't have a diagnosis. Stop saying that. He said it twice.

He told me he was coming back to my room. He never came. The nurse had nothing for me but social worker paperwork.

Two men. Two hats I can't picture. Two angels.

Plant 100 Seeds

God told me to plant 100 seeds. He said some of them won't grow, but plant them anyway. I did. Then four storms hit my garden, and the only thing that survived was the lettuce. With the lettuce outbreak this year, we haven't bought lettuce from a store since April. We've been eating out of our own garden. God was preparing me before the storm ever showed up.

The Ones Who Left and the Ones Who Stayed

My whole family left me when I got sick. I always figured friends might go. Never family. My own mama. My own sister. My blood.

I'm not mad anymore. When I look back and see who was actually standing there, that's all I need.

I thank my husband for being patient with me, taking care of me, telling me never give up. I thank my kids for staying close when my anxiety was through the roof. I thank my dog for loving on me, even though letting him go hurt me.

What I Learned

The whole time I was sick, I was still in school. I started college in September 2023, and I graduated with my bachelor's degree May 23, 2026. God carried me through every bit of it.

I learned that when you cry out to God, He shows up. Not always how you planned. Sometimes He shows up as a man in a hat who pays for your groceries and disappears. Sometimes as lettuce that survives four storms.

So here I am asking God, what's my mission now? I'm going back to work. I'm ready for the good fight. My fists are up.

Has God ever shown up for you through a person you never got the chance to thank? Tell me about your angel in the comments.
