What Does Healing Look Like for Me Every Day?

Healing sometimes starts with saying, “That hurt me.”

Hey, my beautiful readers! Welcome back to My Sassy Stories, where I share my life honestly, what I’ve experienced, how I felt, and what each season has taught me. Today I want to talk about what healing looks like on an everyday basis, because yesterday showed me it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. So, let’s get into today’s story.

What am I going through? What am I doing? What triggers me? And when those triggers show up, am I overcoming them?

Sometimes healing looks like crying over something you thought you were finally learning to live with.

The Season That Changed Me

Some of y’all know, and maybe some of y’all don’t, but in 2025 I went through a dark season. It was lonely. It was scary. Last year, doctors told me I had the lupus, and I didn’t know what my life was going to look like.

While I was trying to understand what was happening with my health, I was also dealing with people no longer being there. Family. My best friend of 30 years. People I thought would stand beside me.

I believe God was removing people who weren’t meant to go where He was taking me. I believe He was shaping me into the woman I had wanted to become my whole life. But that doesn’t mean it stopped hurting.

Yesterday reminded me of that.

The Picture That Hurt

I was on TikTok and ended up looking at my sister’s videos. In one of them was an old family picture from when I was about 16. Everybody else was still in it. I had been cropped out.

Y’all, that hurt. It really, really hurt.

I cried because seeing that made me feel like I wasn’t here. Like I wasn’t part of the family. Like I wasn’t even alive.

My mama was in that picture too, and we haven’t spoken in about a year, since I got married. So seeing it opened up pain I was already carrying.

I told my husband, “They cropped me out of the picture. They made it seem like I’m not here.” I needed to say that out loud. I needed to admit it hurt instead of pretending I was fine.

Remembering Who Is Here

My husband reminded me of what we have going on in our lives.

“You have two stores. You have a bachelor’s degree. You’re working on your associate’s degree in computer technology. God has blessed us with so much. We went through some dark times, but we’re still here.”

And we are. We are still here.

He reminded me that I have him and the kids. I have my close friends, Miss Robin and Kiara. I have a church community I can turn to. “Don’t allow them to dim your light,” he told me. I sat with that.

A couple of weeks ago I left a voicemail for my dad and haven’t heard back. I started wondering whether my sister gave me the wrong number on purpose. I don’t know what happened, but I could feel myself getting pulled deeper.

So I said, “I need a break,” and uninstalled social media. I needed room to breathe.

What Healing Looks Like for Me Today

Healing looks like doing the work. It looks like continuing to blog, continuing to write, and continuing to love on myself. It looks like taking a breath. Pausing. Giving myself a moment before I let the hurt take over my whole day.

Healing also looks like being brave enough to take the next step. We’ve been blessed with a three bedroom house with a basement. A whole house, y’all. And I finally get my office. A space where I can sit down, write, work on my blog, and put time into the things I love.

I can be grateful and excited about this move while still working through what hurts. I wouldn’t be here without the Lord.

Becoming the Girl I Always Wanted to Be

Healing looks like having the courage to step outside my comfort zone and finally be that girl I always wanted to be.

The girl who reads a lot of books. The girl with her hair locked. The girl who didn’t think she was pretty, but is finally beginning to see her own beauty. The girl who used to get F’s and D’s, but now has a bachelor’s degree.

That girl is me.

The Steps I’m Taking Every Day

When I ask myself what healing looks like, this is what I’m practicing:

  1. Letting myself feel

  2. Taking a breath and pausing

  3. Stepping back when I need to, like uninstalling social media

  4. Telling someone who loves me

  5. Writing

  6. Taking care of myself, like walking Mocha and getting my hair done

  7. Speaking up for myself without being scared

  8. Leaning on God

What I Learned

Healing isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Yesterday I cried, and I’m learning that crying and healing can live in the same day. I love myself enough to stop beating myself up over the people who left, and I won’t let their absence make me question my worth. I’m still here. Still fighting. Still healing.

When people have left the table and you’re down and crying, what does healing look like for you today? Tell me in the comments.
